On tour with the Calder Quartet, D.C. TONIGHT..
Good morning,
It’s a Tuesday morning in Washington D.C. and the tour bus is rumbling with the sounds of string players stirring softly in their sleep. For this tour, we have brought with us the Calder Quartet: world-class players, performers, former Juilliard artists-in-residents. They are accustomed to slightly more formal digs and this is their first time on a crowded tour bus. The smell of string resin and priceless wood commingles with that of stale beer. Ah, tour.
We are the pirates, the cowboys, the lonesome spacemen of our time — dreamily contemplating the view of earth from a rocket-ship bound for the sun.

TONIGHT, is the first show of this special acoustic “we’re-doing-this-because-we-can” tour. We’ll be playing some new songs as well as some old, as well as some very old. We’ll be playing a synagogue (tonight), churches, town centers, small hilly amphitheaters surrounded by coyotes and scrub-pine, the errant swell of viola notes wafting in the air. We look forward to seeing you, we look forward to meeting you, we look forward to adding you to this dizzy mess of spacemen and cowboys, virtuosos and pirates.
TONIGHT, we play the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue starting at 8:00 p.m..
Next: Boston (Somerville), then: Philadelphia (Glenside), New York, Toronto, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. After that: London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Cardiff.

oh, how much I wish I could be there,
maybe you could do a similar acoustic tour in Europe? You guys (+ girl)have also a big mainland-Europe fan-base !!
we love you & miss you too =)
I was at the show tonight and it was simply amazing! One of the most amazing shows I have ever been to. I enjoyed watching the artists perform and commingle with one another during the performance. All of you were smiling and having fun. It really was an amazing show to be a part of. I am honored to have had the opportunity to have been at the show to witness such an event. Mikel it was great to meet and speak with you briefly following the show. I look forward to seeing you guys perform again soon.
This show was the first of its type that we have ever been to…and the it was AMAZING. The band is great and well worth every minute of our time. To see you folks up close and personal, in an intimate setting was an experience not soon to be forgotten 🙂
We’ll definitely go again, no doubt.
Caught the show in DC last night. Absoltely amazing as always. You guys are an incredible band and the addition of the Calder Quartet made for a very memorable evening. Thank you all so much for the show and for sticking around afterward to meet everybody, myself included. This band is truely something special. Keep it up.
It was great to see the band perform live once again. As usual, high energy show, with the band and the crowd having a great time. Unique venue only added to the show’s performance. The band members remain one of the most accessible and outgoing groups ever encountered. Listened to the live CD on the way home from the show and the band should add “Do you remember rock ‘N’ Roll Radio?” to the current setlist! Look forward to seeing the band again soon!
I was in attendence at last night’s performance at 6 & I. It was the most mesmerizing and haunting music I’ve heard live. I am hoping to see your band at voodoo fest. My fiance and I are attending the festival for our honeymoon and would love to listen to your wonderful music live again. Thanks and have stellar tour!
Does anyone know if there is a warm up band?
I love the show in D.C.!!!! It was fantastic! I loved meeting y’all and can’t wait ’till you come back in February! My mom said I can get tickets ’cause it’s my birthday!! Can’t wait!
I [selfishly] wish you’d always play shows at places like the somerville theater. You are among my favorite bands, and last night was my first time seeing you live. I’d like to apologize for talking to anna before the last song, and on behalf of my friend who stole anna’s half-full bottle of oatmeal beer. Although I only had to walk five minutes to see you last night, you’re one of few bands that I’d travel great distances to see.
Thank you guys for such amazing passionate music and the BEST live shows I’ve ever seen!!! I’m always so moved every time I listen to you! So great to meet you all and have a chance to ask a few question. Hope to do it again! Keep up the wonderful work, can’t wait to hear more of your new stuff!
I saw you guys in DC on Tuesday night and left the 2nd comment above. I loved the show so much that I bought tickets to see you again in PA tomorrow night! I am so looking forward to it!
going to the glenside pa show tonight. for those that went to the DC show, is there an opening band before ATE or are they the only act
Bruce, since you were there, I guess you found out that there was no opening act.
The show in PA was quite different from the show in DC. It was still excellent, high energy, enthusiastic, and lots of excitement. The venue was quite different…in DC, the venue was a general admission synagogue performance in the sanctuary. The acoustics in the venue alone, made for an unbelievable sound. The Keswick Theater was more open and a bit larger.
The crowd in PA included a much younger audience, whereas the DC show had an older crowd (and by older, I mean mid 20s – mid 30s). There was not much youth there. This was the major difference in the PA show. There was a larger contingent of younger folks (teens – 20) in the audience. Therefore, the dynamics of the audience were significantly different.
I spoke with Mikel again after the PA show and he reaffirmed that the DC show was a smaller more intimate venue and that he thought it was a cool experience. He did not indicate which he preferred, but I think that each venue provided it’s own unique character and each was equally as fun to be at.
The show in NYC last night was ridiculous. The energy was great, the sound was on point. WHAT A GREAT TIME!!! Third time seeing them and this was the best of the bunch. The new songs sound awesome!! Can’t wait for the new CD to drop…
Side note – anyone know where I can get concert t-shirts? They did not have my size and I need one!!!!
I’m bringing my daughter to the show on sat in Seattle. It’s her 17th b-day present..the only thing she asked for. I’m so glad the kid has great taste in music and that ATE will be her very first concert experience.
