The reception you got from him afterwards seemed like he was genuinely impressed! Grats on a fantastic performance. Your music continues to move me in ways that few artists have been able to, thank you for all your work.
I first heard this song on Letterman and have been telling all my friends in Australia to buy your album. It was cool how Letterman actually sought Paul’s approval at the end; David was being such a fan and letting his guard down, you really moved him. Let’s see you in Australia sometime in 2009 – come to Melbourne!!!
You rock!!! I was able to catch Dave’s show here in the Philippines and I had the luck of watching you perform.
The restrained angst but the uncontrollable urge to dance to the beat was a surefire formula for a hit!
Special mention to the Calder Quartet who jived so graciously, especially the one in front, what with his broken bow string still made it through the song beautifully.
Perhaps there is no better indication of how great your song is than Dave’s remark at the end of it. I agree with Jonathan. We all know Dave, don’t we? He parodies and sarcasms just about anybody but when he likes you he sure knows how to show it and show it real good. Take it from Dave. And take a bow, guys. The Philippines will be waiting for you..
Dear Band,
I just want to keep returning to where that song took me, you have a new fan who will be spreading the word. Seldom on a first listen of a song have I experienced what your performance did to me. Many years ago the first time I heard Suzanne by Leonard Cohen or Blue Day by Misex have I been floored in a similar manner. I cant wait to hear more. All the best and you are welcome in Oz anytime.
I just want you to know I am a 56 year old mother and grandmother but I still love my music. Saw you on Letterman and you were terrific. I will be buying your album soon and wish you were coming to Cleveland so I could pack everyone up and come see you. Maybe next time around. Good luck on your tour and I know I will be seeing and hearing you everywhere soon!
That was a great performance on Letterman’s show … this was the first time I’ve heard your song, and I picked up the album over the weekend. It was great from beginning to end … looking forward to seeing you in Columbus, Ohio, later this year!
very nice song. great performance. theres still talent out there after all. other bands should be ashamed of themselves. but whats the title of the song?
wow that was incredible! I have just moved back to Sydney from LA and have been telling everyone I know to hunt down a copy of the album. I hope you guys make it down to Australia this year.
Without trying to overdo it, this performance was without a doubt one of the top three television performances of all time. TATE is not only ingenious in it’s writing and composition, your presence on stage engages people’s emotions like few have ever done in the past, though many have tried.
Thanks for reminding me that there really is great music still out there to be bought.
Hi!! I am also 56 and happily live in the present! Loved your song when I first heard it on the Edge 102.1 cfny TORONTO. Hopefully they will play the SH@T out of it, and then we’ll await your next release! Hope you don’t mind that I get a combo feeling – Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Arcade Fire – but still quite unique and lots of sincerity.
All hail to Letterman for giving the world the chance to see this amazing band.
Last time the first airing of a song had this kind of visceral impact on me was Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) back in the 70s. Sometime Around Midnight is just a perfect song.
I would just like to say this song has to be one of the most moving and greatest songs i have heard in a long long time. I first heard this song on radio 1- and just think its ” BEAUTIFUL “! Might invest in buying your album, if the songs are of as much quality as this one then it will be brill. x x
Keep up the good work! x
I saw your performance on Letterman. I was completely blown away! Once in a great while I’ll hear a song that I know I’ll love forever. This is one of them. Absolutely a beautiful song with great, meaningful lyrics. I could tell Letterman and Paul felt the same way. Love you guys!
I love this song. It is about time I heard a song in which my feelings were EXACTLY expressed. I played it on my TV tape for 3 days , almost non-stop. I LOVE IT……CUDOS==INFINTISIMAL
WOW, I was in a band with Daren the drummer many moons ago. Congrats on the success to all of you, this was the first clip I’ve got to see of the band, sounds great. Look forward to seeing and hearing much more of you guys in the future.
I first heard “Sometime around Midnight” on late night radio, but missed the artist and title. I Google searched “blood boiling / stomach in ropes” and found the song and you! I bought your cd two weeks ago, and I’ve been listening to it ever since. I like every song! When does that ever happen anymore!? I love the poetry of your lyrics and how the songs mean something…and make me want to move – even when I am stuck in traffic. Visit Berkeley, California soon!
I first heard you on Letterman, too. Once I heard it, I knew I had to have your album. I love the combination of rock and classical instruments, and you guys blend them in perfect harmony. I also got the feeling that Letterman and Paul genuinely enjoyed it. I don’t really know what else to say seeing as the song and your performance of it are/were perfect.
I can’t get enough! You blew me away on Letterman. I hadn’t watched in years, and just when I was wondering why I hadn’t turned off the TV, you showed up. Excellence is always inspiring! I’ll see you in Vancouver and am telling all my friends here and Toronto to check you out!
Good Lord I’m 51 and when I saw the Letterman performance I knew I had to track down your release. Finally found a copy and I am very VERY impressed with this music. I see the late show in Chicago has already sold out 02/28/09 (@ Scuba’s)….but I am going to load up the car w/ everyone I can to see the early show it’s a three hour trek mind you… Thanks for breathing life into today’s music.
I’m 54 and fell in love with this group and the music. Went out and immediately bought the CD. My son has a radio show in Cleveland and I told him to check it out. I hope he listens. Please come to the NY, NJ, CT area.
Saw you at the Phoenix in TO Oct 18th – I brought my 20 yr old daughter – we were both impressed. Great live band – can you please releaes another single soon? PS… so happy I was off to the right of the beer showers!

Hauntingly beautiful, perfectly arranged. THANK YOU!

this band moves me with not just their music, but also the poetic lyrics. kind of like bauhaus with energy and soul.
